audiovisual entertainment, transnationalism, digitization, DVD, TV series, reception, users, audience
In my present Ph.D. project, I have brought together two areas of research, which I had been exploring separately in the past, that is media reception and the sociology of technology. I have thus decided to study the impact of the DVD use in the worldwide circulation of Japanese animated TV series (one of my favorite form of audiovisual entertainment since my childhood) and its reception in Switzerland. You can see more about this project on my blog: http://animesondvd.wordpress.com/phd-research/phd_presentation/summary_phd_10january2010/.
I have added to this a third issue, that of globalization or rather transnationalism. Soon, though, my research has expanded so as to include perspectives from the field of history (history of technology and history of media) and philosophy (mediology, an approach developed by French philosopher and historian Regis Debray).
In general, I'm interested in the evolution of such concepts as that of "culture", "identity" and "media" in a context of increased worldwide interaction and of generalized digitization.
I'm now a Ph.D. candidate in media & communication studies in Switzerland. I don't have a teaching or assisting position, which means that there are chances that I won't continue my research career in the academia, but rather outside, most probably in the industry.
I have participated in the writing of chapter 15 of the following book: Manga, an Anthology of Global and Cultural Perspectives, edited by Toni Johnson-Woods, New York: Continuum, 2010.
